Drain / Moth Flies

These flies (Psychodidae) are about 1/16” to 3/16” long with black to light-tan bodies. Their bodies and wings are covered with scales which gives them a fuzzy appearance. They have tear-drop shaped wings, which they hold roof-like over their backs when at rest. The adults have straight antennae and look like small moths. The larvae are aquatic and develop in dirty liquids in drains, sewage filter fields and the bottom of garbage cans that have chronic liquid accumulations.

Drain & Moth Fly Habits

Adult flies usually stay close to the area where they are developing as larvae, but can be attracted to lights. They are poor fliers and are often found resting on walls in the area where they have emerged from the breeding site. When drains are suspected, inspection of the drain and the liquid in the drain will reveal the adult flies on the sides of the drain and the wormlike larvae in liquid in the drain.

Questions To Ask About Drain & Moth Flies

Where are you seeing them? Have you had any plumbing problems; sewage backups, unused drains in showers, sinks or floor drains that are infrequently used?  Do you have a service that takes care of house plants?  Is waste water from dishwashers, laundry being drained into an open area? What is your usually cleaning schedule for drains?

Drain & Moth Fly Inspection Tips

Pay particular attention to floor drains around garbage and dishwashing areas. Check garbage containers for cleanliness. Look for food containers, or recycling bins, that have been forgotten by sanitation or housekeeping workers. Inquire as to cleaning methods and schedule in commercial accounts.
