Drain / Moth Flies

Identifying Drain & Moth Fly Problems

These flies (Psychodidae) are about 1/16” to 3/16” long with black to light-tan bodies. Their bodies and wings are covered with scales which gives them a fuzzy appearance. They have tear-drop shaped wings, which they hold roof-like over their backs when at rest. The adults have straight antennae and look like small moths. The larvae are aquatic and develop in dirty liquids in drains, sewage filter fields and the bottom of garbage cans that have chronic liquid accumulations.

Locating Drain & Moth Fly Infestations

Drain & moth fly infestations usually stay close to the area where they are developing as larvae, but can be attracted to lights. They are poor fliers and are often found resting on walls in the area where they have emerged from the breeding site. When drain fly infestations are suspected, inspection of the drain and the liquid in the drain will reveal the adult flies on the sides of the drain and the wormlike larvae in liquid in the drain.
