Eco-Wise Web-Building Spiders

Web-Building Spiders

There are many species of web building spiders (Araneae). Some are found outside and some inside structures. The webs are used to catch flying and crawling insects. Common spiders around structures include the orb-weaver, cobweb spiders, cellar spiders, and funnel-web spiders.

Web-Building Spider Habits

Although all spiders have a venomous bite to paralyze or kill their prey, except for a few exceptions, these are not a threat to people. Some spiders, like orb weavers, make very distinctive large round/circular webs. Others make rather unorganized webs, or funnel-shaped webs. These spiders build these webs to capture their food source (mainly flying insects). In many cases, lights on the exterior of the structure are attracting the insects, which in turn, attract the spiders.

Problems Presented With Web-Building Spiders

The major problem with spiders, is that they are considered by most people as dangerous. Only a few have bites and venoms that cause reactions in people. Spiders are mostly an unsightly nuisance, when building webs on building or structures.
