Carpet Beetles

Carpet Beetles

There are several species of carpet beetles (Dermestidae) that belong to this general classification. Varied, black and common carpet beetles may be found in structures.  They are small (1/8 inch or less) and round to oval in shape. They have a complete life cycle and the larvae are responsible for damage. Adult beetles can have white, yellow, orange and black colors. Larvae of each species have characteristic hairs or bristles.

Carpet Beetle Habits

These insects can damage many natural fibers (i.e. cotton and wool) and will also feed on any protein source (i.e. dead insects and rodents, fur, feathers, pet hair, as well as some stored products). The adults may feed outside the structure on plants or flowers and migrate in through open windows. Exoskeletons of larvae can be used to identify the species.

Questions To Ask About Carpet Beetles:

  • Where have you seen them?
  • What was the evidence (damage) found?
  • Where was the damaged article stored?
  • Has there been a bird or bat problem in the structure?
  • Has there been a cluster fly or wasp problem?

Carpet Beetle Inspection Tips

Identify any specimens; look in closets, storage bags and pantries. Check closely around crack and crevices, along baseboards; look for evidence of bird nests, or bat roosts. Look for damage to natural fibers (wool, cotton, and larvae exoskeletons).
